1. Buy Energy-Efficient Appliances

Choosing appliances with good energy ratings can help reduce your electricity costs massively. Ideally, you should only choose appliances that are A-rated (at least). They might be a little more costly, but it would work out well in the long run because of the money you would save on energy bills. You could go even further and choose products that are A+ or above, as they could save you even more.

2. Insulate Your Loft

According to Which?, the average loft insulation costs £300 for a three-bedroom, semi-detached house with central heating. Despite the upfront cost, choosing to insulate could mean that you recoup the initial payment within two years, and continue to save on heating bills thereafter.

3. Replace Your Light Bulbs

You might be surprised, but traditional incandescent light bulbs actually consume a large amount of electricity. You should consider switching to halogen incandescent bulbs, or compact fluorescent (CFLs) as they have the potential to use 80% less electricity than traditional light bulbs. They can also last up to 25 times longer!

3. Don’t leave Appliances on Standby

According to the Energy Saving Trust, you could save over £30 a year just by turning your appliances off standby mode. It is often forgotten that most appliances don’t reset themselves if you turn the plug off, the only exceptions being TV recorders, satellites and anything that operates on standby.

5. Layer Up

It may seem obvious, but putting on an extra jumper instead of turning on the heating can save you a surprising amount! Last year, a British couple claimed they saved £15,000 by turning off their central heating for ten years. We don’t recommend that you go that far, but it just goes to show that choosing to layer up instead of turning up the thermostat could save you a lot in the long run.
